First Stage Finalists, Worcester Fire Fighters Memorial National Design Competition

From Michael J. Donoghue, President, Worcester Fire Fighters Memorial, Inc. July 12. 2004

On behalf of the Worcester Fire Fighters Memorial Committee, I would like to thank the design competitors who gave their commitment, time and effort in producing 158 outstanding design submissions for the first stage of the Worcester Fire Fighters Memorial Design Competition.

The surviving families of the fallen fire fighters, the Memorial Committee and its design jury were impressed and appreciative of the quality and creative thought of each and every entry. Everyone who had the chance to see the first stage submissions at Alden Memorial Hall, Worcester Polytechnic Institute on the evening of July 8, 2004, were overwhelmed by the demonstrated quality of design, talent, thought and effort in producing the drawings. Each competitor who made the effort to submit drawings has our most appreciative thanks and admiration.

The loss of the six fallen fire fighters and its impact on the surviving families and the Worcester Community has placed a special responsibility and awareness on our design jury. They worked hard to review each drawing. There was considerable debate and dialogue on all aspects of the submitted designs. For those first stage competitors who have not been selected to continue to the second stage of the competition, we ask that you continue to demonstrate your talents and creativity in other design competitions that might be made available to you. Your participation in this design competition has raised awareness and acknowledgement of the memory and sacrifice of those heroes that died on December 3, 1999.

We are pleased to announce the selected first stage competitors who will be given the opportunity to continue to the second stage of the competition:
